This is the third and final exhibition of Shiseido Gallery's 8th Tsubakikai. The common theme this time is “neglect and indifference”.
I exhibited two pillars and two chairs. I have been holding spatial exhibitions since the first year. In the first year, I exhibited the work called “Relationship” which used walls, and in the second year, we exhibited the work called “Rope” (collaboration with Hiroshi Sugito) which used rope. Both attempts were to actively create a relationship between the work and the viewer, or between the works and the works. In contrast, this time's pillars were created as something that simply exists (in other words, something unrelated) rather than something that actively creates relationships. One is located near the entrance of Gallery 1 to obstruct the flow of traffic, and the other is located near the center of Gallery 2. The thickness and finishing are similar to the actual pillars of the Ginza Shiseido Building, giving a little character to this neutral space, which was probably created with the aim of being a white cube. On the other hand, the chair looks like a work of art, and by placing it near the pillar as an exhibit, it emphasizes that the pillar is part of the space rather than an exhibit. What do other artists and viewers feel and react to the pillars that have been made into the background? Also, will there be a relationship or not? If so, what kind of relationship will it have? You will observe things like this. Space is a quiet existence that is always behind people and objects, but is rarely brought into our consciousness. Floors, walls, ceilings, and pillars are there for granted, but their presence should actually have a big impact on how a space feels. It's hard for us who are used to it to notice it, but if you pay attention to it, it's very interesting. Through the pillars, you can experience a space that is unrelated to the exhibition, but in some sense is related to and influences the exhibition.
