Thumbtack Grid

This is the exhibition design for FormSWISS exhibition at Kyoto ddd Gallery. The exhibition includes the works on visual communication design by Swiss designers and the interview articles on them by Arata Maruyama, the organizer of FormSWISS. It is the third exhibition following Tokyo and Kobe. Unlike the Tokyo and Kobe venues, this venue is relatively small and had a large ratio of wall surfaces that can be exhibited, so instead of the previous display system using only the floor with concrete blocks, we prepare one using both the wall and the floor with thumbtacks and magnets. In the 95m2 almost square room, thumbtacks are placed on the walls and floor at a pitch of 200mm to create a grid, which is then used to hold the exhibits in place with magnets. Maruyama's layout divides the exhibits into three cultural areas (German-speaking, French-speaking, and Italian-speaking) and arranges them in such a way that they form irregular outlines like a topography, as opposed to the grid. The works are displayed naked without cases, and are stacked on the floor and changed several times during the course of the exhibition in order to present as many works as possible in the limited space. This rough and fluid treatment of the works is also a reflection of the behavior of the designers in their ateliers. The overlap between the thumbtack grid and the works makes visitors aware of the similarities and differences between the three cultural spheres.
