Copse

This is the renovation of the citizen lobby of Kobe city office. It has functions such as waiting, easy meeting, eating and drinking space of the adjacent cafe. In spite of small scale renovation, the design competition was held by Kobe city, and a flexible and simple space promoting creativity and exchanges suitable for “The Design City Kobe” was requested. So, I proposed the concept not to change the interior and to change only furnitures. It is the proposal that the furnitures make not only the function but also the space and the scenery. I thought to make a mechanism constantly blowing a new wind in the place that tends to stagnate by daring to overlay soft and inhomogeneous landscape like a copse of Rokko mountain or tree leaves drifting on a surface of water on the hard and homogeneous lobby space. The 45 wooden plates of different shape and size are lined up at the same height. And they can be used for both benches and tables depending on the circumstances of a person usig them. Due to the shape without corners like the middle between the square and the ellipse, there are no directionality and various arrangements are possible, the placement and usage are changing every day every moment. Eleven kinds of local thinned timber mainly from Rokko mountain are used on the top plate of bench(=table). In addition, the name of the tree species is stamped in the edge of the top plate to feel the furniture while connecting the texture and the name of the tree pecies.
