Lounge between pillars

This is the lounge at the side of the escalator in Seibu Ikebukuro Flagship Store. Generally four thick pillars appear around the escalator by the structural requirement and a shallow space that is difficult to use is inevitably born between the pillars. This is the project to think about how to use such a place that is universal in a sense. I entirely used the space 8.3 m in width, 1.2 m in depth and 2.3 m in height between the pillars and made the sitting and resting places that the five seats like a hammock were continuous. You are wrapped by the wide sheet when you sit on it, so the public space suddenly changes to your private space. It draws a catenary curve when a person does not sit on it, and it draws an inverted triangle to extent straight when a person sits on it, so the overall appearance changes variously depending on the position to sit and the number of people to sit. It is fun to sit by yourself but also people who pass the front and come up the escalator can enjoy the rhythmical change.

柱の間の休憩所

西武池袋店のエスカレーター脇の休憩所である。一般的に、エスカレーターの周囲には構造的に4本の太い柱が現れ、その柱と柱の間に奥行の浅い細長い空間が必然的に生まれる。そのようなある意味普遍的ともいえる場所の使い方について考えたプロジェクトである。柱の間の幅8.3m、奥行1.2m、高さ2.3mの空間をめいっぱい使い、ハンモックが連なった様な、座って休む場所を考えた。座ると、奥行のあるシートに包まれ、パブリックな空間が急にプライベートな空間に変わる。人が座っていない時は、懸垂曲線を描き、人が座るとシートがピンと張り逆三角形を描くので、座る場所や人数によって、全体の見え方が様々に変化する。自ら座るのも楽しいが、前を通りかかった人やエスカレーターを上がって来る人たちもそのリズミカルな変化を楽しむことができる休憩所である。
