Insect cage

This is the box made for "DEROLL Commissions - Series 1 : Box" planed by design director Eizo Okada. He personally asked each of the five young architects to design not a house but a one-off box. And he also planned to make the catalog, hold the exhibition and sell them. I decided to create a box to contain live insects because I wanted to design it while imagining the contents and surroundings just like designing a building. I made it with the fine three-dimensional lattice so that the inside is visible and the air passes. The boundary of the inside and the outside is ambiguous and produce the distance, because it is made of three-dimensional lattice. So even if you put a poison spider in the box and touch the box, you are not bitten because of the distance. The thickness of the lattice line is as thin as 0.3 mm but the insect in the box looks clearly and unclearly due to the overlapping of many lines. Unlike transparent glass and acrylic boxes the distance between you and the insect always changes on your hand. You feel the insect very close and far away. There is no concept of parts and joints because it is made integrally by the optical shaping method. Also there is almost no concept of inside and outside which a box necessarily has. What will happen if the technology advances and the line of the lattice further becomes fine? If it exceeds a certain limit, does a basically different phenomenon emerge? I made this box with such interest.

虫かご

デザイン・ディレクター岡田栄造氏による「デロール・コミッションズ・シリーズ 1：箱」のためにつくった箱である。彼は、個人的に５人の若い建築家それぞれに家ではなく一点物の箱の制作を依頼した。また、カタログをつくり、展覧会を開き、販売することも予定していた。建物の設計と同じように、中身や周囲の状況を想像しながら考えたいと思い、生きた虫を入れる箱をつくることにした。中が見え空気が通うように、細い立体格子で箱をつくった。内外の境界は立体格子なので、曖昧で厚みを持っている。だから、毒蜘蛛を箱に入れ手に取っても、立体格子の厚みにより咬まれない。格子の太さは0.3ミリと細いが、沢山の線の重なりによって、中の虫が良く見えたり見えなかったりする。透明なガラスやアクリル製の箱と違って、虫との距離が手の上で常に変化する。虫をとても近くに感じたり、逆に遠くに感じたりする。作り方は、光造形という技術を用い一体で作られていて、パーツやジョイントという概念が無い。箱というものが必然的に持ってしまう内と外という概念も希薄である。今後技術が進み、さらに格子の精度を上げ細くしていくと、いったいどうなるのか。ある限界を超えると、まったく違ったものが立ち現れるのか。そんな興味を持ちつつこの箱をつくった。
