Beam

This is the space design for the fashion exhibition " Feel and Think:A New Era of Tokyo Fashion " at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. The installations by ten groups of active fashion designers working in Tokyo are exhibited in order to introduce the present of Tokyo's fashion. A space to induce exhibitions including not only clothes but also installation and performance with designer's thoughts and backgrounds was required. Therefore, I thought to prepare the space that is one room despite being divided into multiple rather than just preparing 10 rooms. Specifically, the exhibition room is divided into various rectangles by steel beams bridged in the height of the person's eyes and the exhibitors choose the favorite place (although there are restrictions of the area to some extent, they can chose one parcel or multiple parcels away from each other) to exhibit. The beams are supported of only the walls of the exhibition room and the top and bottom are open completely. The beams intercept the visibility in the height of person's eyes. They go through under the beam and move to the next parcel and there is no determined route. The space created by the beams makes the visitor aware of the height of the space because in the height direction the space is divided into three spaces of under the beams, beams, and over the beams. So, the beams make the visitors aware of not only the height of their eyes but also the floor and the ceiling that they usually are not aware of. The exhibitors must think the way of exhibition and the visitors must think the way of see it because this space is not made for exhibits and precedes the exhibits. If we refer to the classification method of White Cube and Site Specific in exhibition spaces, it is the way of thinking closer to the latter. Each of exhibits, space and viewers is independent and influence each other. I hoped that a situation (but not a object) that something is always happening there is born, for example the viewers themselves become part of the exhibition. The exhibitors express what they felt in this place in ways that can only be done in this place instead of bringing and exhibiting the works created somewhere else. The visitor will also experience the events that will appear only when they have gone there and another visitor will also experience the sight. I envision such a situation.
